Porthminster Beach Restaurant

2 rosettes

In a region with no shortage of places to eat with an accompanying sea view, the landmark white building surveying Porthminster Beach stands head and shoulders above much of the competition. With its tiled floors and decked terrace, there's a Mediterranean feel to the place, while an Aussie chef makes sure that the spanking-fresh local fish and seafood is subjected to a globetrotting array of fusion influences. Crispy-fried salt-and-spice squid is served with an Asian salad and a zippy citrus miso, while main-course John Dory fillets are pan fried and partnered with tempura prawns, jasmine rice, chilli ponzu and lime. Or there may be Indonesian-style monkfish curry with mussels, prawns, coconut and tamarind. There are good meat dishes too - Thai-style duck curry, perhaps, with aubergine, bok choy, crispy noodles and beansprout salad. To finish, poached pear cuts the richness of chocolate cr?me br?l?e with chocolate cinder biscuit and lavender-scented white chocolate.
