Description
The glass cube perched on the sea wall above the waves certainly makes a style statement in the tweedy golfing Mecca of St Andrews. It is an elemental setting for a restaurant dealing in the ocean's bounty: look out of the floor-to-ceiling windows - that is where your food is coming from. In fact, the connection with the sea is so direct that the staff could dangle a line outside and haul fish straight from waves to pan. Inside, too, is a modishly minimalist and sleek tableau of glinting glass, metal and wood. The kitchen team have nowhere to hide in the gleaming steel theatre of their open-plan kitchen; perhaps this is why they go about their business with quiet, effortless professionalism. No tantrums or drama here, just unbeatably fresh fish and shellfish treated simply and married thoughtfully with clear, modern flavours, as in a starter of sesame seed and cumin-crusted cod served with butternut squash and pancetta velouté and sage oil. Next up, pan-seared halibut is given robust treatment with Parmentier potatoes, shiitake mushrooms, oxtail, garlic purée and red wine reduction. All that light and healthy seafood means there's no need to skip dessert: try a warm chocolate fondant with toasted marshmallow and pistachio ice cream.

Best meal I have ever had! My husband took me to the restuarnt for my 30th Bday. Food, wine and service was exceptional and we had the best view in the house, back right corner. We were there for just over 3 hours! Relaxed but professional atmosphere. Prices not too bad and I would say even beter than Martin Wisharts!

Took my wife there on our wedding anniversary as she loves seafood, especially shellfish. Unfortunately no shellfish on menu except scallops. Service was deplorable. Ordered wine which still hadn't arrived during starter. When it arrived, no apology. The staff, especially maitre d', were more interested in people on another table. We were made to feel like 2nd-class citizens. Food nothing exceptional. Overpriced, £110 for two! Without doubt our worst anniversary meal ever.

Such a busy restaurant, but still we were looked after very well by a well-drilled team of staff. Great views, exciting food, relaxed and unfussy service creates an exhilarating atmosphere. We had a lot of fun, being a table of 4, and didn't feel as if we were being too loud. A great night.
