The Seafood Restaurant

The Scores, ST ANDREWS, KY16 9AS

2 rosettes

A blunt local might call it a glass box on the sea wall, but this sleek, cubist's dream of a building perched above the cold water's of St Andrews Bay has been a bold 21st-century statement in this historic city since 2003. With all that glass everyone gets a view over the West Sands beach (where they filmed that famous slo-mo running scene in Chariots of Fire) and the legendary Old Course beyond. And the sea, of course. In the circumstances, anything but fresh, vibrant seafood on the menu wouldn't be cricket (or should that be golf?) and, as revealed by the name of the place, it is duly delivered. They know well enough here that the produce speaks for itself, but that is not to say the food lacks for ideas and a modern touch. From the open-plan kitchen comes all the simplicity of a half-dozen West Coast oysters with shallot vinaigrette and lemon, or go for salad Niçoise with steamed hake and anchovy purée. For main course, sustainable North Sea coley comes with a sage risotto, confit fennel and lemon butter, while the seafood platter is piled high with the freshest of shellfish. There are meat and vegetarian options on the menu. Finish with rhubarb crumble - no humble crumble this, served as it is with mango and dates, papaya curd and milk ice cream. The excellent wine list is worth more than a moment of your time.

Best meal I have ever had! My husband took me to the restuarnt for my 30th Bday. Food, wine and service was exceptional and we had the best view in the house, back right corner. We were there for just over 3 hours! Relaxed but professional atmosphere. Prices not too bad and I would say even beter than Martin Wisharts!

Took my wife there on our wedding anniversary as she loves seafood, especially shellfish. Unfortunately no shellfish on menu except scallops. Service was deplorable. Ordered wine which still hadn't arrived during starter. When it arrived, no apology. The staff, especially maitre d', were more interested in people on another table. We were made to feel like 2nd-class citizens. Food nothing exceptional. Overpriced, £110 for two! Without doubt our worst anniversary meal ever.

Such a busy restaurant, but still we were looked after very well by a well-drilled team of staff. Great views, exciting food, relaxed and unfussy service creates an exhilarating atmosphere. We had a lot of fun, being a table of 4, and didn't feel as if we were being too loud. A great night.
