The Blyth Hotel

Station Road, SOUTHWOLD, IP18 6AY

The Ashwells' attractively restored Edwardian hotel augments the range of options in trendy Southwold, and benefits from being only a five minute walk down to the golden sands and gaily painted beach-huts on the shore. Like many another coastal place, it's a good setting for fresh fish, and you can't go far wrong with a starter of mackerel fillet served with Serrano ham and celeriac remoulade, followed by cod with crushed new potatoes, pea-shoots and a chorizo and pea fricassée. The range is wider, though, encompassing well herb-crusted pork fillet with braised leeks, poached apple and butternut purée in sage jus, and veggie offerings such as fried falafel with spiced couscous and harissa. Dessert options may include white chocolate pannacotta with strawberry sorbet, apple and rhubarb crumble with custard, or a minutely detailed take on key lime pie. The celebrated Adnams ales are on tap in the bar.
