56 High Street, SOUTHWOLD, IP18 6DN
Dating back to the 14th century, this Grade II listed place on Southwold High Street is packed full of fascinating period details - most of the wooden beams come from battle ships used in the battle of Sole Bay, plus there's ornate ceilings, coving and open fireplaces. In contrast the furniture cuts a contemporary dash - think plain wooden tables and high-backed chairs. Relaxed, casual service helps the buzzy feel, and fish, locally-landed daily, is a big part of the draw. The menu stalks a modern British path, ingredients are sourced with care and food miles get listed alongside each dish. Kick off with goats' cheese pannacotta with walnut pesto, carpaccio of beetroot and rocket, then move on to pan-roasted turbot (served on the bone) with rösti potato and brown shrimp and lemon butter. There are a couple of meat main courses, too, plus desserts such as lemon posset with candied lemon and Chantilly cream.
