Smiths at Gretna Green

Gretna Green, GRETNA, DG16 5EA

2 rosettes

Smiths certainly extends the options for those fleeing here with marriage on their minds, and makes a stylish stay to celebrate a landmark anniversary. The imaginative menus are especially good at game, seen in a starter of heather-smoked hare with pickled pear purée and beetroot pannacotta, perhaps followed by venison loin with a faggot, a strip of liver, roasted celeriac and puréed chestnuts. Nori-wrapped salmon in crab and white bean chowder is one of the fish possibilities, while a revival of baked Alaska is a challenge requiring careful timing. Try carrot cake with cinnamon ice cream, and don't miss the excellent bread, which comes in a plant-pot.
