Traditional old pubs don't get much more robust than The Bull, with its solid stone walls and flagged floors. The 21st-century sees the place in the safe hands of Nigel Haworth and Craig Bancroft of Northcote fame as part of their mini-empire of gastro-boozers. That means there's a nicely balanced modernity to the interior and lots of local food and drink on offer. It's still very much a pub, with all the easy-going associations you'd expect, including outside tables for when the weather is good. The menu shows hearty respect for British tradition, but doesn't get bogged down in the past. Start with twice-baked Wensleydale cheese soufflé served with beetroot relish and foraged leaves, or a Scotch egg made with venison and black pudding. Lancashire hotpot is a staple on the menu, or you might go for a local steak cooked on the grill.
