Six acres of lovely gardens running down to the river Calder make the historic 16th-century manor house a popular venue for tying the knot. The kitchen hauls in splendid seasonal Cumbrian produce: vegetables, fruit and herbs are picked fresh at nearby Muncaster Castle, and great care is taken in tracking down the best local meat and fish. The Priory restaurant makes a traditional setting for ideas that run the gamut from tried-and-tested potted shrimps and smoked salmon with mustard-dressed salad, to lamb chump with dauphinoise and braised red cabbage in redcurrant and rosemary jus. For dessert, toffee apple bread-and-butter pudding rounds things off nicely.
