Restaurant at New Hall

2 rosettes

It's hard to believe but before Birmingham's suburban sprawl engulfed the village of Sutton Coldfield, this 800-year-old moat house stood in empty countryside. Nowadays, it's cushioned from the hurly-burly of modern Brum by 26 acres of fabulous grounds. The Bridge Restaurant is the top-end dining option, where mullioned stained-glass windows blend with a gently modern neutral decor. Ham hock and goose liver terrine is matched with poached cherries and chamomile jelly, ahead of crisp-skinned stone bass with spiced aubergine, fennel, sunblushed tomatoes and lemon, and a crab beignet. A vibrant finale delivers glazed lemon tart with raspberry sorbet, meringue and fresh raspberries.
