Even when busy-which is frequently the case-The Jack never loses its cool, for this place is run with charm and generosity by Paul Parnell and his team. It looks and feels like a pub, with no airs and graces, just a satisfying mix of old and new throughout its series of atmospheric rooms. Long-term chef Matthew Mason is passionate about Devon produce and his menu is awash with high quality ingredients that reflect the landscape and waters in this beautiful part of the country. There's a refine contemporary polish to the kitchen's output, for everything is presented with style, but flavour is always king. Seared scallops with apple and lime is a modish plateful (and quite a small one), or go for lightly curried cod fillet with tempura mussels. Loin and breast of Whimple lamb is a main course that hits the spot, with boulangère potatoes and an anchovy dressing, and there are updated pub dishes, too, such as venison cottage pie. Finish with lemon mousse with meringues and rhubarb (poached and sorbet).
