The Jack In The Green Inn

2 rosettes

Even when busy - which it frequently is - The Jack never loses its cool, for this place is run with charm and generosity by Paul Parnell and his team. It looks and feels like a pub, with no airs and graces, just a satisfying mix of old and new throughout its series of atmospheric rooms. The kitchen is passionate about Devon produce and composes a menu awash with high quality ingredients that reflect the landscape and waters in this beautiful part of the country. There's a refined contemporary polish to the kitchen's output, for everything is presented with style, but flavour is always king. A savoury 'cr?me br?l?e' made with chicken liver and wild morel mushrooms with celeriac and truffle is an up-to-date way to start, followed by a well-thought-out main course of five spice-scented Creedy Carver duck breast pointed with the tart note of griottine cherries, plus sweet potato fondant and pak choi. To finish, there's a zingy confection of lemon posset, lime pannacotta, mint and tequila granita and salted lemon ice cream.
