The Jack looks and feels like a pub, with no airs and graces, just a satisfying mix of old and new throughout its series of atmospheric rooms. There's a refined contemporary polish to the kitchen's output, and flavour is always king. A savoury 'crème brûlée' made with chicken liver and wild morel mushrooms with celeriac and truffle is a good way to start, followed by a well-thought-out main course of five spice-scented Creedy Carver duck breast pointed with the tart note of griottine cherries, plus sweet potato fondant and pak choi. To finish, there's a zingy confection of lemon posset, lime pannacotta, mint and tequila granita and salted lemon ice cream.
