The Anchor

High Street, RIPLEY, GU23 6AE

2 rosettes

The Anchor is a friendly gastro-pub in the modern idiom with a dusting of pedigree, with dark-wood furniture, slate floors and armchairs by a log-burner. The kitchen delivers simple dining-pub fare with creativity and panache. Dishes cover all the bases with a contemporary touch, for example starters of pressed ham hock and chorizo with squid and pineapple relish, and black pudding with a poached pear and pea purée. Sound technique is seen in braised ox cheek with roast sweet potato and mushroom spelt, and in pan-fried gurnard fillet with parsley sauce, grapes, celeriac and chard. To finish, try ginger rice pudding with roast plums.
