Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook Forbury Square at this stylish restaurant on the ground-floor of a modern office block. It is very smartly dressed in the contemporary manner, with large canvases of modern art, high-backed leather chairs, rich colours and well-spaced linen-clad tables. There's a popular wine bar area where you can choose something from the excellent wine list, and choose something off the menu as well. The cooking is based on classic French thinking with plenty of contemporary ideas, with excellent British ingredients to the fore. The menu evolves with the seasons, while presentation is a strong suit, and the dishes show a good degree of refinement. Start with seared scallops with boudin noir, pancetta and sweetcorn purée, move on to stuffed pig's trotter with veal sweetbreads, foie gras, truffled mash and Madeira jus, and finish with blood orange soufflé with chocolate sorbet and orange jelly.
