26 The Forbury, READING, RG1 3EJ
The Forbury is a boutique townhouse hotel that presents a sober face to the world, but once inside, aims to wow. Striking, sexy and sybaritic, the place is peppered with modern art, bold fabrics and wallpapers, and a centrepiece Italian chandelier with 86,000 glass beads running from top to bottom of the building. Not to be outdone in the style stakes, the Cerise Restaurant lives up to its name, with cherry-red the prevailing tone providing the backdrop to a lively menu of brasserie food, full of contemporary ideas and juxtapositions that make sense. Try mussel and cod fishcake with coriander and lime coulis, perhaps, then rump of West Country lamb pepped up with Moroccan spices and apricot and mint couscous, or roasted monkfish wrapped in the salty embrace of Parma ham, with peas, thyme and chorizo. Finally, all of the flavours and textures ring true in a zesty dessert involving pineapple carpaccio with lemongrass pannacotta and pineapple and black pepper sorbet. On warm days you can eat in the secret garden in the shade of a pomegranate tree.
