Perched on the waterfront, Kota is named from the Maori word for seafood. In a spacious beamed room with tiled floor, an inspired spin on marine-based fusion food wins many converts. Lively openers such as mackerel tartare with beetroot, watercress aļoli and horseradish snow, or local mussels in leeks, saffron and cider, give way to generous main dishes like brill with crispy chicken wings, purple potato gnocchi, oyster mushrooms and Romanesco in chicken jus. Finish with West Country cheeses and home-made chutneys, or dark chocolate tart with miso caramel, sesame praline and green tea ice cream. There's also a six-course tasting menu.
