Leverhulme Hotel, Central Road, PORT SUNLIGHT, CH62 5EZ
The whiter-than-white interiors of the Leverhulme are fitting for a building that has its origins in cleanliness. One of the Edwardian era's great philanthropists, Lord Leverhulme, opened the place in 1907 as a cottage hospital for soap works employees at his Port Sunlight garden village, and who wouldn't find their health restored amid such exquisite art deco surroundings? The French-Mediterranean menu is now an experimental mix of small and large plates that come to table as they're finished. Expect thin-sliced octopus in lemon oil, Brillat-Savarin in pesto, then orange-glazed confit duck legs, or even a whole sea-bream for two, before closing with white chocolate and vanilla risotto.
