The Oaks Hotel

1 rosettes

On the edge of the village, this small hotel occupies an imposing Edwardian property with glorious views of Porlock Bay from the reception rooms and restaurant, with its wrap-around windows. Antiques, pictures and fresh flowers proliferate, and log fires add a homely and comforting touch. The cooking tends towards the unpretentious and traditional. The daily-changing four-course menu might open with a tartlet, its pastry soft and crumbly, of cherry tomatoes, goats' cheese and pine nuts before a fish course: perhaps hot smoked haddock mousse. Sauces are a strong suit: one of cheesy fennel for sea-fresh fillet of John Dory, port and redcurrant for roast fillet of Exmoor venison, accompanied by garden-fresh vegetables. Breads are made each morning, and puddings include an excellent passionfruit custard tart, and lemon and raspberry roulade.
