Wentbridge House Hotel

The Great North Road, Wentbridge, PONTEFRACT, WF8 3JJ

2 rosettes

Set in 20 acres of landscaped grounds in a West Yorkshire conservation village, Wentbridge is a stone-built grand manor house built at the turn of the 18th century. It had long associations with the Leatham family, luminaries of Barclays Bank, but became a country hotel in 1960. A degree of glossy formality prevails within, not least in the Fleur de Lys dining room, where candy-coloured upholstery creates a light, bright effect, and the cooking reaches out in all directions for its references. First up might be seared Shetland scallops with beans in truffled cappuccino for a majestic array of complementary elements. This may be followed by venison fillet with beetroot, cavolo nero and celeriac dauphinoise, or perfectly fresh cod Spanish-style with a stuffed red pepper, patatas bravas and aļoli. Main courses for sharing are quite the thing these days; if you can arrive at an agreement, go for classic Chateaubriand with choice of sauces, or duck ą l'orange. To finish, there's zesty lemon tart with raspberry sorbet and a pistachio tuile, or perhaps a boozy baked Alaska bursting with cherries.
