Open all day and all week from breakfast until late, this former pub with its slate-tiled exterior and easy-going seasidey vibe strikes a relaxed pose but takes the food seriously. There's attention to detail in the likes of smoked salmon and scrambled egg with sourdough toast at breakfast, or a lunchtime king prawn laksa. This is a kitchen that can turn out a classy butter-roasted guinea fowl for lunch, alongside an open sandwich with steak, onion jam and fried egg. If you settle down in the evening for the full three courses you might go from potted shrimps with crayfish, pickles and toast to braised Cornish brill with fennel and anchovies, finishing with a dessert of vanilla pannacotta with passionfruit and honeycomb. It all takes place in a cheery setting of blond wood and tasteful neutral colours, and the service is suitably on the ball.
