Description
Everything about this restaurant with rooms is pleasingly understated, from the plain white exterior to the simple, yet classic food delivered by the kitchen. A beautifully restored 17th-century former coaching inn with large oak beams and generously sized, linen-clad tables, the dining room is an attractive space, smart yet unpretentious. Service is by a professional, well trained team who display good knowledge of the menu and the 700-strong wine list. The food has a confidence about it, with sound classical techniques underpinning the use of top quality produce on the sensibly concise fixed-price carte (there's a tasting menu, too). The chef proprietor is so hands-on he might even have caught the brill that turns up in a fricassée with mussels and carrot purée. The presentation of dishes allows the food to speak for itself, but technique is good and the balance of flavours key: scallops with butternut squash purée is a well-judged starter, slow-cooked lamb with root vegetables and Hampshire hotpot a fine main course, and mango mousse with passionfruit and pineapple a well-crafted finish. The reasonably priced wine list is worth exploring.

Many thanks to Jake for a memorable dinner with you last Friday. Our party of eight were tantalised by your exciting and imaginative dishes, discreet and sensitive service and excellent rendition of complimentary wines. We were so pleased that you and Camilla were able to spend some time with us at the end of our meal. We were fascinated to hear of your dedication.
