The epitome of a friendly, big-hearted family operation, Ben Prior's appealing high-street venue in the popular little village of Marazion, which is practically a suburb of Penzance. A bright, airy feel pervades the place, enhanced by local artworks, and the real wood floors and raffia chairs keep things agreeably rustic. Locally sourced ingredients pour in fresh each day, allowing the menus to change just as often, but continuity is maintained in the free-thinking contemporary style of the cooking. Begin with an Asian mash-up of curried tempura John Dory fillets with sweet chilli jam and a salad of orange, fennel and capers, before a modern classic pairing of turbot and ox cheek with cep gnocchi and puréed carrot in bourguignon sauce, or smoked loin and faggot of venison with roast salsify and creamed celeriac in damsons and port. Dessert might be burnt honey cream with walnut praline and a pear poached in saffron and Sauternes.
