Ben's Cornish Kitchen

West End, Marazion, PENZANCE, TR17 0EL

1 rosettes

Relaxed and easygoing, Ben Prior's friendly neighbourhood restaurant ticks all of the right boxes with its unfussily voguish setting - wooden floors, plain wood tables and raffia chairs, whitewashed and stone walls decorated with local art - and the sort of straightforward contemporary food made from lovingly-sourced seasonal ingredients that we all want to eat these days. The recently-opened first-floor dining room not only lets more lucky punters in, but also gives sweeping sea views to St Michael's Mount. The kitchen uses excellent regional ingredients to good effect, delivering the likes of home-cured beef with Parmesan custard, watercress and capers, which might be followed by a more ambitious idea involving tenderloin and crispy belly of local pork matched with roast and puréed cauliflower, hazelnuts, verjus onions, and smoked apple and tonka bean purée. Just the ticket, too, is a well-made dessert of vanilla pannacotta, berry compôte and honeycomb.
