The Talbot Hotel

New Street, OUNDLE, Nr Peterborough, PE8 4EA

1 rosettes

If The Talbot looks ancient, that's maybe because its stone façades, mullioned windows and grand timber staircase were recycled from Fotheringhay Castle in the 17th century. Nowadays it does a brisk trade as a hotel, coffee house and eatery, aka the restaurant, where bare tables and classy cutlery work well in the modern, minimalist-yet-comfy space. Start with crab linguine ramped up with dill, lemon, chilli crème fraîche and shaved truffle, followed by a home-baked, shortcrust pastry-topped steak, ale and mushroom pie with thick-cut chips. Otherwise, go for more up-to-date roast lamb rump with Moroccan-spiced couscous and chickpea salsa and finish with fig and almond tart sauced with honey ice cream.
