The White Horse

1 rosettes

Descending from a hike along the spine of the South Downs, you couldn't ask for a more fortifying pitstop. This village hostelry looks every inch the modern dining pub with wooden and quarry-tiled floors, bare beams and mismatched vintage tables. The mood is unbuttoned and family-friendly, while the kitchen is driven by an enthusiasm for local ingredients, served up in a straightforward contemporary vein. This might translate as duck liver and pistachio terrine wrapped in smoked bacon with roasted pear purée, followed by trout fishcakes with ginger and lime-dressed summer slaw. Puddings take a similarly comfort-oriented route - perhaps chocolate brownie with salt caramel ice cream.
