Robert Thompson has long been an ambassador for the Isle of Wight and his eponymous restaurant has a genuine buzz to it. An open-plan kitchen ensures proper engagement with guests in the uncluttered dining room. The kitchen shows a serious commitment to island produce and dishes are eloquently executed. Big flavours abound in a tartine of chicken livers with caramelised celeriac, watercress and pickles. Baked hake, black cabbage, crown prince squash, pearl onions and confit potato is a well-orchestrated main, each element making an impact. Glazed lemon tart with yogurt sorbet is a fine way to round things off.
