Beatrix Potter spent her holidays in this white Georgian house. These days, on a scale small enough to unite guests, a four-course dinner menu is served at a single start time. A pair of choices is offered at most stages, beginning perhaps with seared scallops and a balsamic-dressed salad of shoots and cress, before a fixed fish dish such as cayenne-peppered haddock. A main course could be beautifully fresh sea bass in the company of spring onions, chilli, garlic and ginger, or noisettes of local lamb in red wine jus. The sticky toffee pudding displays a lighter touch than is customary, but still comes with hot butterscotch sauce.
