Dating from the 17th century, this inn has been sympathetically updated to give it a more contemporary edge. There are two dining rooms, one in a rear conservatory, the other overlooking the high street. A glance at the menu shows a kitchen seaming the modern British vein. Ham hock terrine with a hint of cheese has a good depth of flavour, attractively presented on a slate with piccalilli and crisp breads, and may precede tail of Cornish monkfish, accurately timed and seasoned, vibrant anchovy salsa a good foil, served with dauphinoise potatoes. End with something like white chocolate and raspberry crème brûlée with crisp, light and flaky almond twists.
