7 Church Street, MONMOUTH, NP25 3BX
The owners of #7 have rebranded the former Bistro Prego, which is squeezed into a traffic-free, town-centre street of interesting shops and galleries. The restaurant is fairly narrow, with white walls, some exposed brickwork and a wooden floor. Modern British menus offer plenty of scope, represented well by seared scallops, caramelised onion purée and rocket; lamb three ways - seared loin, pan-fried liver, breast fritter - with celeriac purée and roast onions; and baked lemon cheesecake with pistachios. Worthy alternatives are baked monkfish in Italian speck, mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, roast artichoke and black olive tapenade, or pappardelle pasta, grilled asparagus, roast red onion, olive oil and parmesan.
