18 High Street, WINDSOR, SL4 1LJ
Sitting directly opposite the Royal Guildhall, with the Queen's Berkshire bolthole on hand, the hotel named after the latter could hardly be better positioned. It's an originally Tudor building with a balcony and patriotic flagpoles, and a large dining room called 18. At the moment, the kitchen is rather coasting along on a default version of modernish British cookery, with the likes of scallops and cauliflower purée with baby carrots to start, and main courses like cod with peperonata and chickpeas, corn-fed chicken with mushrooms in red wine sauce, or decent lamb chump with Anna potatoes and chunks of celeriac in a rich lamb jus, garnished with thoughtfully placed spots of purée. Rhubarb crumble looks endearingly homely, and comes with its own sorbet and a scattering of toasted almonds. The 'British' cheese selection is a good one, if Irish patrons will forgive the renationalising of Cashel Blue.
