The Sheene Mill

39 Station Road, MELBOURN, SG8 6DX

2 rosettes

The 16th-century mill house no longer works the River Mel, but the waterway and pond are reminders of its former life. Now, there are glorious gardens, a spa and stylish bedrooms, while the restaurant is watched over by an engaging service team. The kitchen takes a contemporary approach. Rock oyster beignets arrive as a starter with chilli and parsley salsa and cucumber jelly, for example, and mackerel cannelloni is a clever construction pointed up by home-made piccalilli. Slow-cooked belly of pork with braised Puy lentils, black pudding bonbon and sautéed wild mushrooms is a rustic-chic main course option, with pineapple and star anise tarte Tatin among some creative desserts.
