A gem of a place in an old coaching inn a short stroll from the harbour. Georgian details remain in the bar and restaurant, and neutral colours keep it light, bright and contemporary. You might start with seared pigeon breast with roasted squash and move onto rib-eye of Red Poll beef. Look for the specials menu offering the catch of the day - grilled whole lemon sole with seaweed butter and hand-cut chips, maybe, or cider-cured sea trout with sea vegetables and shellfish sauce. Fans of oysters might kick off with half-dozen West Mersea rocks fried in a batter made with Aspall cider. Finish with lemon, almond and polenta cake.
