Malmaison Reading

Great Western House, 18-20 Station Road, READING, RG1 1JX

1 rosettes

By all accounts the oldest railway hotel in the world, the early Victorian property is a real charmer. Its historic past is recognised in some decorative touches, but this being a Mal, the overall finish is glamorous and stylish. Settle into the Malbar for a pre-dinner cocktail or head straight into the restaurant with its bare-brick walls and bench seating recalling the old railway couchettes. The brasserie-inspired menu traverses the globe in search of feel-good flavours; prawn cocktail to start, say, or tuna tartare with an Asian spin, or a classic moules marinière. Move on to a Black Angus steak cooked on the grill, porcini risotto or a blinged-up burger.
