1 Wharfside Street, The Mailbox, BIRMINGHAM, B1 1RD
Housed in the former Royal Mail sorting office, the groovy Mailbox development is a flagship of Brum's sexy new image. The city's outpost of this stylish metropolitan hotel and brasserie chain has bagged the ideal location, with designer boutiques and a branch of Harvey Nic's as neighbours. The Mal brasserie pulls of its trademark look using a classic clubby blend of darkwood and chocolate leather, while old pictures of Birmingham's canal heritage give a sense of place. Staff are on the ball - there are no airs and graces here - and the menu matches the mood with unfussy modern brasserie classics. So you might start with chicken liver parfait with tomato chutney and toasted brioche, then move on to a straight-up grilled steak served with crispy frites and béarnaise sauce, or pan-fried sea bass with chorizo, heritage potatoes, samphire and cockle vinaigrette. Finish with an iced hazelnut parfait with praline and Valrhona chocolate sauce.
