Macdonald Bath Spa

Overlooking landscaped gardens, and perfectly placed for exploring the city, the Bath Spa is a grand Georgian mansion with a distinctly elegant finish. The classy (and formal) Vellore Restaurant is in the original ballroom - they partied in style back then - with its high-domed ceiling, pillars and all round stately air. There's also a canopied outdoor terrace. Engaging staff and a helpful sommelier keep things on track. On the menu, the crowd-pleasing and sensibly unfussy dishes have broad appeal, and are not beyond a few bright ideas too; beer battered scampi comes with dipping sauces (sweet chilli and Dijon mustard among them), followed by roast saddle of hare with braised haunch and chicory, or herb risotto with aubergine caviar and basil oil. Finish with dark chocolate pannacotta with a cocoa and almond crumble and toffee ice cream.
