The Elderflower Restaurant

4A Quay Street, LYMINGTON, SO41 3AS

3 rosettes

A moment's stroll from the quay at Lymington, The Elderflower is a traditional-looking double-fronted restaurant in the old part of town, opened in 2014 by Andrew and Marjolaine Du Bourg, a partnership with its entwined roots in Yorkshire and the Charente. Low beamed ceilings and smartly linened tables establish a sympathetic ambience within, and Andrew's menus, honed by valuable experience in many of London's premier addresses, are overflowing with intelligence and enthusiasm. There's something earthy and rootsy about his chunky beef terrine, for all that it comes with the inspired touch of a Brownsea Island oyster and anchovy straws, while main course could be an exciting assemblage of roast Barbary duck with cured duck ham, golden beetroot and a dramatic polenta bedazzled with violet mustard, in an aromatic jus of peach and lavender. In December, a clever menu take on the Twelve Days of Christmas comes into play, with queen scallops standing in for the swimming swans. Desserts designed like ornamental conversation pieces are all the rage, so expect an intricately textured chocolate creation to arrive in a seashell on a wooden base, while the reinvention of trifle continues apace, when a properly boozy version comes replete with damsons, greengages and orange custard.
