The Slaughters Manor House

3 rosettes

Lower Slaughter looks lovelier than ever since reopening in the spring of 2016 after a major refurb. The new look has 500 years of history to live up to, and the shell of the place of course remains intact - an effortlessly charming Cotswold manor in a village unravaged by time. The dining room looks out on to the grounds through French windows, and now extends into part of the original chapel while retaining a large arched fireplace. The cooking, keeps its contemporary edge, bringing prime materials together in fascinating counterpoint, in presentations of impeccable elegance. After lobster ravioli with rock melon, charred radicchio and basil, or curry-spiced marinated duck liver with apple and pickled mustard seeds, come truly eye-catching main-course meats - perhaps teriyaki Cotswold kid goat with fennel and pineapple. Technique is compelling throughout, as when sea bass arrives with intense oyster pannacotta, lime and cucumber. It all concludes in triumph with exotic flavours to the fore in lime yogurt mousse, scented with blood orange, rose and menthol, or whipped pistachio cream with matcha tea, honey and bitter chocolate. The seven-course taster offers a dazzling circuit of the kitchen's abilities.
