The Slaughters Country Inn

LOWER SLAUGHTER, Stow-on-the-Wold, GL54 2HS

2 rosettes

This artfully modernised, 17th-century Cotswold-stone inn makes good use of its riverside terrace in this peaceful village. In the 1920s the building was a crammer school for Eton College, thus it now has Eton's Restaurant, whose mullioned windows, bare polished-wood or pewter tables and stuffed fish give a country-house feel. Edging occasionally into pub grub territory - the modern British menu also covers the bar - there are seasonal soups of the day, roast plaice with green beans, capers, and brown shrimp and herb butter, and lemon cheesecake with pineapple and mint salad. And, no surprise, the casually dressed staff also serve Eton mess.
