Wild Honey

12 Saint George St, LONDON, W1S 2FB

3 rosettes

Wild Honey may be opposite the magnificent St George's Church in the heart of Mayfair but it is refreshingly free from pretension or stuffiness. Run by experienced practitioners Anthony Demetre and Will Smith, this French-style, wood-panelled bistrot deluxe delivers the same brand of refined modern brasserie cooking set against an elegant backdrop of crimson banquettes and mustard-yellow chairs. For even more informal Gallic dining, grab a stool at the onyx-topped front bar, perhaps with a plate of hand-chopped Scottish beef tartare and oyster mayo, and a 250ml carafe of wine. Luxury ingredients work happily alongside humbler cuts of meat in the kitchen, which is grounded in classic technique but not afraid to show a more contemporary hand. Devon crab is accompanied by apple, celeriac and sea herbs, while crisp pig's head turns up with silky potato purée and pickled radish. At main course, a classic Marseille-influenced bouillabaisse with grilled fish and all the proper accompaniments rubs shoulders with venison is teamed with crushed Delica pumpkin and Armagnac sauce. For something sweet, try poached pear, chocolate sorbet, coffee cream and warm madeleine cake or choose from a selection of carefully considered British and French artisanal cheeses.
