Union Street Café

47-51 Great Suffolk Street, LONDON, SE1 0BS

2 rosettes

This café's casual, urban-chic warehouse sheen, with funky lighting, buffed concrete, striking artwork and an open kitchen, is a big hit, as is the cooking, driven by the best market produce. Skilled simplicity and a confident light modern touch keep the food high on flavour. Cotechino, with fonduta, lentils and truffle, delivers the authentic Italian goods, as does squid-ink gnocchi with clams, mussels and gurnard. Main courses run to full-on fallow deer with juniper, blackberries, celeriac and rainbow chard as well as Mediterranean-style octopus with lentil and mushroom purée. Finish with cannolo, the classic Sicilian pastry, with candied orange and pistachio ice cream.
