Typing Room

Town Hall Hotel, Patriot Square, LONDON, E2 9NF

3 rosettes

The restaurant occupies what was the typing pool back when this boutique hotel was Bethnal Green's town hall. It's an attractive space with a decor of muted greys, a parquet floor, well-spaced marble-topped tables and an old fireplace. An open-to-view kitchen shows the chefs calmly working away. In charge is Lee Westcott, who's worked at some classy places over the years so isn't short of experience. Five- and seven-course no-choice tasting menus are the format, plus two- and three-course set-price lunches with a couple of options per course. Lee turns out some exciting stuff. A selection of snacks kicks off a meal, among them pig's head with smoked apple, before starters along the lines of mackerel fillet with kohlrabi, horseradish and tarragon, or celeriac, pear, fermented mushrooms and hazelnuts. Dishes are imaginatively conceived and successfully brought off. The richness of duck leg is offset by fermented cabbage, cavolo nero and turnips, and roast baby chicken is more conventionally served with garlic, asparagus and Jersey Royals. Fish might appear as lemon sole fillets in smoked butter with artichoke and walnuts, verjuice adding a sharper element, and puddings can be as experimental as pumpkin with coffee and orange, or beetroot with white chocolate and olives.
