The Royal Horseguards

2 Whitehall Court, LONDON, SW1A 2EJ

2 rosettes

This grand old pile was home to the Secret Service in World War I, and now makes an upmarket base for London's attractions. Its posh restaurant comes kitted out with plush crimson banquettes and deals in appealing modern brasserie-style food with its roots in French classics. Expect starters such as Old Spots pork belly with braised pineapple, port jus and bitter cress and move on to venison loin with Lyonnaise potatoes, sprouts, chestnuts and English ham, or straightforward grills - beef rib, perhaps with a choice of classic sauces. To finish, perhaps a pineapple variant of tarte Tatin jazzed up with caramel, spiced passionfruit sauce and coconut crunch ice cream.
