The Ninth is NYC-born chef and TV regular Jun Tanaka's first solo venture since leaving the Pearl in Holborn, and so-called as it's the ninth place he's worked in. Tanaka shuns past fine-dining ostentation for a relaxed, cool look and modern menu of sharing dishes. The decor is a pared-back look from exposed brick walls, decorated concrete, floorboards and mirrors, dotted with eye-catching statement pieces like dangling glass lighting or metal wine cages and wine glass racks. The entrance slate-tiled bar comes with high stools, while leather banquettes and café-style chairs provide the comforts alongside mahogany or white marble-topped tables. A light Mediterranean menu is underpinned by a classic French influence and bursts with seasonality and flavour, taking an on-trend sharing approach. Dividing into nine categories (there's that number again), the roster's focus treats vegetable dishes with the same importance as everything else. In-vogue snacks like big-hit oxtail croquettes or barbajuans pep up the interest factor, while smoked duck breast might come with caramelised chicory and walnuts, or a delightful cavolo nero vegetarian dish with hazelnut pesto. Desserts are classics, such as an absolute-perfection pain perdu teamed with honeycomb and vanilla ice cream. Service is relaxed but spot-on, while the wine list is inspired.
