The National Dining Rooms

Sainsbury Wing, The National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, LONDON, WC2N 5DN

1 rosettes

Overlooking Trafalgar Square from the National Gallery, this sleek all-day operation would never struggle to fill its tables, but there's a lot more to the cooking than a simple pit-stop when you're checking out the art. Unfussy modern British dishes draw on well-sourced seasonal materials, starting with chargrilled squid with chilli and lime, while the main course is a deftly handled treatment of whole lemon sole teamed with buttery brown shrimps and capers; meatier appetites might home in on beer-fed rib-eye steak with braised short rib and roasted bone marrow. It all ends with a neat tweak on an old comfort classic: apricot bread and butter pudding slathered with marmalade.
