The Fox & Grapes

9 Camp Road, Wimbledon, LONDON, SW19 4UN

1 rosettes

It may sound like a cosy old-fashioned boozer, but The Fox & Grapes has been transformed into a contemporary food-oriented pub with a cavernous open-plan interior of parquet floors, wood panelling, and chunky bare wooden tables and mismatched chairs wrapped around a central island bar. The man behind this radically reinvented gastro-pub on the edge of Wimbledon Common is none other than Claude Bosi of Mayfair restaurant Hibiscus fame (see entry), so if the prices at the West-End flagship are a bit rich for your blood, you can buy into his flavour-driven take on pub classics via crispy ox tongue with watercress and sauce gribiche, then mains taking in brown ale-battered hake and chips with mushy peas, or Cumberland sausage with chive mash and red onion gravy. For pudding, generous satisfaction might come in the shape of apple and rhubarb crumble with custard, or a platter of fine artisan British cheeses.
