Bleeding Heart Yard, Off Greville Street, LONDON, EC1N 8SJ
Named after the courtyard where 17th-century 'It girl' Lady Elizabeth Hatton was killed by her jealous lover, this bastion of French cooking has atmosphere in spades. The cellar restaurant is popular for business lunches and romantic dinners. The kitchen deals in French fare built on sound British produce. Start with ballottine of confit duck and chicken with pistachio, saffron jelly and apple and raisin chutney, followed by an assiette comprising suckling pig and crackling with an apricot and sage faggot, a crispy pig's trotter cromesquis, fondant potato and Bramley apple sauce. To finish, the decadence of dark chocolate delice and caramel honeycomb is tempered by fresh mandarin and orange coulis.
