Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, LONDON, SE1 8XX

1 rosettes

With a name that may suggest an empire in a galaxy, far, far, away, Skylon is in fact in the Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank of the River Thames. There's a cool bar, a swish grill, and a restaurant headed up by executive chef Adam Gray. The restaurant occupies a large, high-ceilinged space facing the water, and there's a vast wall of glass so you won't miss a thing. It looks very sharp with its well-spaced (there is plenty of room after all), linen-clad tables, muted colour tones and impressive designer light fittings. On the menu are some smart classical ideas gently updated in places, based on good quality produce, and with a modern British flavour. Start, perhaps, with pressed duck foie gras and Lincolnshire smoked eel terrine with apple jelly and warm brioche, and follow on with pan-fried halibut with creamed celeriac, wild mushrooms, smoked bacon and red wine gravy.
