Roka Charlotte Street

37 Charlotte Street, LONDON, W1T 1RR

3 rosettes

There could scarcely be a more fitting image of London media land than the clusters of contented diners sitting behind a row of potted plants on Charlotte Street eating modern Japanese food. This branch of the Roka group reliably packs them in, and if you venture beyond the potted plants, there's a huge room filled with daylight from full-height windows, and equipped with chunky furniture in natural woods. Pride of place is the robata counter, where close-up views of the kitchen action are mesmeric. The menu's fusion temptations include maki rolls filled with piri piri-spiced yellowfin tuna and cucumber, or tempura-battered soft-shell crab in a dressing of roasted chilli. Meat options have all the pedigree one expects, whether for Korean-spiced lamb cutlets, smoked duck breast with barley miso and kumquats, or the legendary Wagyu beef with pickled mushrooms. Baby back ribs are coated over and over at the grill before you, before being garnished with a line of slivered cashews and spring onion. Technical skills are given free rein in desserts such as a pasta tube made to resemble bamboo, filled with apple mousse, accompanying banana ice cream and salted cocoa crumble.
