Roast
The Floral Hall,
Borough Market,
Stoney Street,
LONDON,
SE1 1TL
Hovering strategically above the gastronomic Elysium of Borough Market, the ornately windowed Roast is one of the more mouth-wateringly situated eateries in the capital. From the first squeezed orange juice of 7am to the last digestifs of evening, it's a proficiently run, inspiring venue that also offers some pretty good eating. Start with a nibble of pork dripping on toasted bloomer, and then ponder a choice that takes in Cornish crab baked in the shell under a Berkswell cheese topping, charred Wester Ross salmon with dandelion leaves, pickled red onion and sour cream, and braised beef featherblade with a dumpling of caramelised onion and thyme. The eponymous roasts remain a favourite option. Finish with whiskied-up chocolate tart, served with a retro ice cream flavoured with Camp coffee.

Hugely disappointing. The food is fine, if predictable, but the service is slapdash. We felt on a production line, treated with less care than the suckling pigs being manhandled in the kitchen behind. Even at half the large pricetag, I would have felt short-changed. Avoid.
