Antonio Mellino captures the essence of Southern Italy in his sleek Mayfair establishment where top-notch ingredients (many imported from Italy), homemade pasta and solid technical skills are the foundations of the kitchen, with the owner's son Antonio on the stoves. Super-fresh piscine produce is treated with respect in no-frills dishes such as a starter of chargrilled octopus served on a warm bed of grilled fennel and courgette arrives with a rich celeriac cream. For main course, a well-judged and precisely cooked dish of scialatielli pasta with pumpkin, cuttlefish, prawns and mint is a harmonious combination. Desserts are no less impressive: for example the pastiera Napoletana is as rich as it is elaborate.
