Once the favoured watering-hole Evelyn Waugh and the future Edward VIII, Quaglino's is a masterpiece of art deco style on the cruise-ship scale, complete with golden-lit staircase to tempt out your inner Gloria Swanson. Flavours shine from the plate: soused charred mackerel with mustard onion compôte and vodka dill pickle won't get forgotten in a hurry. Mains offer roast breast and croquetted leg of pheasant with cabbage and pear in truffled jus, or a whole sea bass for sharing, served on saffron pilaf and beurre blanc. A profiterole makeover sees a ball of cracked choux filled with salted caramel, but doused in chocolate sauce by the waiter as of old.
