Outlaw's at The Capital

Basil Street, Knightsbridge, LONDON, SW3 1AT

3 rosettes

If Nathan Outlaw's Cornish flagship is too far-flung for a visit, his London set-up in The Capital, a splendid boutique townhouse hotel just around the corner from Harrods, might offer easier access to the stellar seafood cooking. The restaurant occupies an understated art deco-esque space with blond wood panelling, paintings of seahorses, wall mirrors and unclothed tables, and the clued-up service team takes a more unbuttoned approach than is often the case in London restaurants at this rarefied level. Obviously Outlaw can't be regularly at the stoves here, so Tom Brown (formerly at Outlaw's St Enodoc restaurant), heads up the kitchen, ensuring that the emphasis remains to let top-class Cornish materials speak eloquently for themselves, helped along with pin-sharp technique. Seafood and saffron soup sounds simple enough, but here it rises to another plane, with impeccably-handled lobster and octopus delivering bursts of clearly-defined flavours, plus a breaded oyster, red pepper, fennel and dill all having their part to play. Next up, succulent monkfish is wrapped in bacon and helped along by cabbage and clams, and it's all offset with a trenchant red wine tartare dressing. To finish, passionfruit tart comes hot from the oven with toasted coconut and yogurt sorbet. The set lunch deal offers remarkable value.
