19-21 Monmouth Street, LONDON, WC2H 9DD
Impervious to fads and fashion and about as French as they come, the original front dining room has changed little since the 1940s (unapologetically Parisian bistro), while beyond there's a series of lighter, cosy rooms including a mezzanine-style loft. The menu mixes the times, too; country terrine is jazzed up with artichoke chutney, before heading to the Med for a main course of sea bass fillet with potato, olive and basil cake and sauce vièrge. Elsewhere there are timeless classics such as snails with garlic and parsley butter, or coq au vin. Close-set tables, resolutely French service and regional wines and cheeses add to the authenticity and upbeat vibe.
