Little Social

5 Pollen St, LONDON, W1S 1NE

3 rosettes

The chilled-out yet unmistakeably classy baby brother of Pollen Street Social smack opposite, Jason Atherton's Little Social (part of his expanding restaurant portfolio), takes a decidedly modern look at the neighbourhood Parisian bistro. Hidden behind its discreet black frontage, the interior looks every part 'little' at first sight, but then it seems to roll on forever from its entrance dining-bar. The relaxed, buzzy soundtrack is spot-on too, likewise the switched-on front of house team. Oxblood-leather wall banquettes and booths, unclothed tables and café-style chairs provide the comforts, while globe lighting, mirrors and atmospheric Parisian-lifestyle photographs, posters and wall-mounted Michelin maps add authenticity without cliché. The well-honed cooking is equally impressive, putting quality above cheffy showiness, applying a light modern spin to top-draw ingredients delivered with classy presentation and smack-in-your-mouth flavour. The roster is basically London-meets-Paris (and beyond): witness warm subtly smoked eel with earthy beetroot, peppy horseradish cream and watercress, while roasted Cornish line-caught cod comes teamed up with perky Asian-spiced cauliflower and a show-stopping aromatic duck broth. Dishes to share might include four-day aged Buccleuch Estate rib-eye, served with roasted bone marrow, béarnaise and peppercorn sauces and beef-dripping chips. Desserts have a classic leaning, perhaps an apple tarte Tatin to share, while the maple-glazed doughnuts are something of a house favourite.
